Most homeowners think of their A/C as a cooling system, but it also acts as a dehumidifier.
As warm indoor air passes over the cold evaporator coil, moisture in that air condenses on the coil and drains away. This is one of the ways your air conditioner helps your home feel comfortable.
That's why temperature isn't the only measurement of comfort.
A house can be 72°F and still feel uncomfortable if the indoor humidity is too high.
There are several possible reasons.
Sometimes, Mother Nature deserves at least some of the blame.
When outdoor air is hot and humid, your home is constantly fighting against moisture trying to get inside through doors, windows, cracks, and normal air leakage.

This can happen for several reasons, including an oversized system, thermostat issues, airflow problems, or other equipment concerns.

Your A/C running doesn't automatically mean it's removing humidity effectively.
The evaporator coil is where much of the moisture removal happens.
If the coil is dirty, airflow can become restricted and system performance can suffer. If the coil is freezing over, that's often a sign of another issue, such as restricted airflow, low refrigerant, or a mechanical problem.

If you see ice, don't simply keep running the system and hope it clears up. A frozen coil deserves attention.

If ducts are leaking in an attic, crawl space, basement, or wall cavity, you're losing conditioned air before it reaches the rooms you're trying to cool.

Sometimes your A/C is working properly but the humidity load in your home is simply more than the system is designed to handle.

In these situations, a whole-home dehumidifier may be worth considering.
A dedicated dehumidifier is designed specifically to remove moisture from the air and can work alongside your A/C to improve comfort.
For most homes, indoor relative humidity somewhere around 30%–50% is generally considered a comfortable range.
During Buffalo's humid summer weather, however, keeping your home in that range can sometimes be challenging.
Don't rely solely on how the house feels.
Measure it.
Before calling an HVAC professional, there are a few simple things you can look at yourself:

If it's dirty, replace it.
